Model Review and Validation
Model validation vets models for specific downstream uses (i.e. coordination, quantity extraction, prefabrication, design documentation). Model validation can occur any time during design and model creation, but Q5 recommends an iterative approach, with at least three model review periods (occurring prior to Construction Documentation development, at 50% CDs and again at 90% CDs).
Q5 Awarded BIM Facilitation for Manhattan Restoration Project
Q5 was recently selected to facilitate the construction BIM utilization for Phase 3 of the Renovations and Rehabilitations of Pier A, located at North River Pier, New York, NY. Q5 will be working with Mc Gowan Builders and H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture to deliver a cradle to cradle BIM implementation on this project.
The project specifications require specific BIM uses during construction, based on the a design-provided LD 300 Building Information Models. Mc Gowan Builders selected Q5 to implement the requirements: bring the BIMs up to LD 500, run a BIM-enabled coordination process, and turn over a Record BIM to the client, Battery Park City Authority.
Q5 Awarded VDC Services on Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office
Q5 has been working with Woodward Design+Build for several months now, providing general consultation on Woodward’s VDC implementation. Woodward recently engaged Q5 to support the creation and use of BIMs on the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office. Woodward will also be using Q5′s input on the process for the project to inform and updates its current Revit standards.
The VDC for the project kicks off this week, with Q5 facilitating BIM Execution Planning at Woodward’s office in New Orleans, LA. Laura Handler, Director of Operations, and Pierce Reynoldson, Virtual Design & Construction Associate, will be blogging live from the kickoff this week, describing the BIM Execution Planning activities.
Q5 Provides Strategic BIM Guidance to Woodward Design+Build
Q5 is collaborating with Woodward Design+Build, headquartered in New Orleans, LA, to provide strategic guidance to its BIM adoption. Woodward has been utilizing Revit for design for 2 years and is looking to expands it BIM program. Currently, Q5 is assisting Woodward with BIM-enabled cost estimating, its BIM quality-assurance program and BIM education.
Q5 Consults with Payette Associates
Q5 was recently brought on by Payette Associates, inc. to provide VDC consultation services on the 252,000 SF Children’s Hospital at Hershey Medical Center, in Hershey PA. Q5 will provide a model review to Payette, analyzing for the ability to collaborate in the future using models.
The graphic below identifies some of the parts and pieces of the model Q5 will be reviewing.
Project Kickoff
Last week, Laura Handler, Q5′s Operating Manager, and John Tocci, Q5′s Strategic Adviser, attended a kickoff meeting for Square1, a Crate & Barrel located in Mississauga, ON. For this project, Crate & Barrel is aiming for a significant level of process transformation – the design team, construction team, subcontractors and suppliers were all present at the kickoff. The project includes significant pre-fabrication of components and a schedule reduction of almost 50%.
Q5′s role on Square1 is VDC process facilitator. The design team is working to create a detailed BIM, but other team members’ experience with BIM varies. Q5 will enable team members to leverage the BIM during coordination, procurement and construction. This will be accomplished through execution of model exchange protocols, training and BEP Execution Planning, as well as model reviews.
The 8-hour project kickoff meeting was a success by all accounts – information shared, relationships developed, goals aligned. And better than that, the team had a great time.
Can You Prefabricate From Your Model?
One of the many benefits of utilizing a BIM that is often touted is direct from model prefabrication, but it often begs the question, “Is my model fabrication-ready?”.
We are currently performing model review for a client to determine opportunities for prefabrication along with any modeling issues that need to be resolved for prefabrication. Although each project and system is different, here are some of the many rules of thumb to consider:
>What are the tolerances required of the system? If a fabricator requires accuracy to the nears 1/8″, the model must be accurate to the nearest 1/8″. (But of course, some systems require more accuracy than that!)
> Are there naming or material conventions to consider?
> How “clean” does the geometry need to be? For instance, can two components overlap at their connection point? Will the fabricator pick that up and detail the connection or is the extent of the model critical?
The same goes for any downstream use of a BIM; in most cases, it must be modeled considered each downstream use. We recomend utilizing a BIM Execution Planning process to determine the downstream uses that a team wants to use and Model Review to verify that models are complying with the standards set out in the BIM Execution Plan.
VDC Services
Q5 is pleased to announce the award a new project for Bergmeyer Associates. Q5 will be performing Model Review and Validation on the prototype design for TD Bank. Specifically, Q5 will look at the first store to be built, in Queens Village NY, which is serving as a physical prototype for the rollout of potentially 200+ stores going forward.
Validating Models for Crate & Barrel
We just delivered a model validation report to John Moebes, Director of Construction at Crate & Barrel, for Crate & Barrel Woodfield. The report documented issues and discrepancies that we found within or between architecture, structure, HVAC and metal framing models. Although the team is modeling and coordinating in Revit, it is always helpful to have a second, unbiased, set of eyes for review.
At this early stage, we were able to identify both modeling strategy issues and coordination issues:

The team was free to keep designing and at the end of our review, recieved a succinct report enabling them to quickly correct any issues and move forward with a clean, coordinated model.
Services for Crate & Barrel
Q5 was recently asked to provide select VDC services on two Crate & Barrel retail stores. Crate & Barrel is quite knowledgeable about the deep potential of VDC to dramatically improve design documentation and project execution, so had already selected BIM-enabled teams (including an integrated team for steel).
For Crate & Barrel Woodfield, located in Shaumburg IL, Q5 will initially be providing model validation and spatial coordination.
For Crate & Barrel, Square1, located in Mississauga ON, Q5 will provide BIM Execution Planning, model validation and spatial coordination, along with team assembly assistance.
